World Bank Projects India’s GDP Growth at 7.2% for FY26, Driven by Robust Domestic Demand

  • The World Bank Group released its flagship ‘Global Economic Prospects: January 2026’ report, projecting India’s GDP growth rate at 7.2% for Financial Year 2025-26 (FY26), significantly revised upward from the 6.3% forecast issued in June 2025. The strong growth is primarily driven by robust domestic demand, particularly strong private consumption supported by tax reforms and rising household incomes in rural areas, offsetting global economic uncertainties.
  • For FY27, India’s GDP growth is projected to moderate to 6.5% compared to the previous estimate of 7.2%, based on the assumption that 50% import tariffs imposed by the United States remain in place throughout the forecast horizon. However, the report notes that the impact of higher US tariffs on Indian exports is expected to be mitigated by stronger-than-anticipated momentum in domestic demand, with growth projected to edge up to 6.6% in FY28, aided by robust services activity, export recovery, and investment pickup.
  • The report highlights that India’s inflation is expected to converge to the Reserve Bank of India’s 4% target, assuming stable seasonal conditions contain food price inflation. This inflation trajectory would provide the RBI with greater flexibility for monetary policy decisions, potentially supporting investment and consumption through appropriate interest rate management while maintaining price stability as a primary objective.
  • Global growth projections show a marginal slowdown from 2.7% in Calendar Year 2025 to 2.6% in CY26, a decline of 10 basis points. For the South Asia region (excluding Pakistan and Afghanistan, which the World Bank categorizes under Middle East and North Africa), growth is projected at 7.1% in CY25, supported by robust economic activity in India that mitigates impacts of rising trade tensions and heightened policy uncertainty, before easing to 6.2% in CY26, reflecting higher US tariffs’ impact on India’s export performance.
